David

by Henry from Savannah

A man after God's own heart

David was a great man who served God throughout his entire life. He trusted God, feared God, and, for the most part, obeyed God. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me”. David believed in God and relied on Him for everything. Although at times it was difficult, David listened and obeyed. He was a great man that God used in great ways.

David wasn't always great, that's one of the reasons i admire him. He was a normal boy, the youngest of eight, and a shepherd. Even though David was a young boy, God was working through him in huge ways, in ways that even his family didn't know about. David killed lions and bears with his bare hands, so great was the strength God gave him. However, Davids most known exploit was the slaying of Goliath. Goliath was a nine foot tall Philistine giant who was feared by all of Israel. God took David into a difficult situation, and with God's help, David overcame his trials and became stronger. No matter how small David seemed, he trusted in God, and God rewarded him with strength and courage.

After the slaying of Goliath, David gained fame and fortune. He quickly gained ranks in the army, led Israel to many victories, and became the most famous human in Israel. He was being sung to on the streets, so much in fact, that King Saul grew extremely jealous of David. He attempted to kill David multiple times, but each time God provided David a way out. Though Saul was after David's life, David felt no anger towards Saul, the Lords anointed, and refused to harm him, even though many opportunities arose. God lead David into and out of trials, trials that David couldn't get out of without relying on God.

Even with great power, a man is nothing without God. David knew this, and thankfully this was something he learned as a young boy. When tending the sheep, he would spend hours on end with God. Either he was talking to the All Mighty, or writing psalms and proverbs testifying the glories of God. God worked through David in his early life, preparing him to be the future leader of Israel.

David grew from a young boy to a great leader. From a lowly shepherd to a war hero. From a peasant to a king. Along the way, he wasn't alone for a single second, for the Lord his God was with him wherever he went. He walked through his entire life with God, followed Him in nearly every aspect, and trusted God with his life. When the phrase, "A man after God's own heart" comes up, there is none better suited for it then King David. A small boy following God in everything, a young boy who became a king.
