Tim Dicus

by Brent from Sycamore Junior High

Would you jump into harm's way to save a girl that you didn’t even know? That’s what Mr. Tim Dicus did when he attempted to save Jaime Daigle from an attacking shark. Tim saw Jaime in a pool of blood in the ocean and sprang into action. Even though he did not save Ms. Daigle, he is still a hero to many of us today.

My hero is a 54 year old man named Tim Dicus. Mr. Dicus is from Destin, Florida, and works at a local beach as a lifeguard. The fourteen year old student in Destin was face down in a pool of blood. As Mr. Dicus saw this, he jumped onto his 9 foot-long surf board.

When Tim put Jaime on his surfboard, the 8 foot-long bull shark was still on the pursuit. People think being a lifeguard is an easy job, but Tim proved them wrong. He paddled as hard as he could 200 yards. By the time Mr. Dicus got to the shore of the beach, Jaime was bleeding profusely in her legs. Two days later, Jaime was pronounced dead while Tim was by her bedside. Although Jaime is not with us today, everyone knows that Tim Dicus is a hero.

Tim Dicus was a hero to all of us but he is a “hero on the spot” in author T.A Barron’s mind. T.A Barron describes a hero on the spot as someone who, before a crisis, seems like perfectly ordinary folk going through life in an ordinary way. Then a crisis explodes and this hero steps forward to save someone’s life. That’s why T.A Barron would think of Tim Dicus as a “Hero on the spot.”

After reading my essay I hope you understand more that it isn’t an easy thing to be a lifeguard. But that’s the responsibility you accept if you decide to be a lifeguard. Mr. Dicus is a perfect example of what a lifeguard and hero should be.
