Dr. Scott Cozad & Staff

by Ron Wilson

Truman Medical Center East of Kansas City was such a great help. They ran the tests which diagnosed my tumor as cancer. They informed me that I would need radiation and chemotherapy treatments before surgery. TMC East would be able to perform the surgery. Truman Medical Center West, located downtown Kansas City would do the chemotherapy. Unfortunately, TMC East or TMC West had no access to radiation equipment. The hospitals with the radiation equipment would not treat anyone without health insurance.

I was in limbo for three weeks, until I received a phone call from a wonderful Angel, Nancy Shy. She worked for Metro Care, A Charitable Health Care Referral Network. Helping people without health insurance. I was given an appointment time and day to see Dr. Scott Cozad.

Dr. Scott Cozad and his kind staff took me in like a stray, saving my life. They were all so warm and kind to me. Always giving me the smiles and encouragement, I needed to get through six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. Each time I was ready to give up, they were there to give me the right words and courage to keep going.

I have finished the six week treatment, and will have surgery on December 4th, 2007. My experience with this group of Heroes will be a highlighted memory during this journey. I would never have made it this far without the wonderful people at Liberty Radiation Oncology Center, located in Liberty, Missouri.

I would like to Thank the Oncology Nurse at TMC West for being so kind and extremely precise with the needles I had to endure during chemotherapy. Thank-You, Jeannie! ;) Thanks to Dr. Jill Moormeier (Oncology), and Dr. Howard Kremer, (Surgeon) for being there for me. They are not quite through with me yet. I feel very blessed to have found so many Heroes.

I do not always look this bad. It was taken at the end of my last chemotherapy treatment.

The My Hero Project Celebrates The Best of Humanity. I have restored hope for humanity after reading the amazing stories of real Heroes living and working miracles everyday. The news should recognize The Heroes! Saving Lives! Not criminals, ending lives.

Thanks to MyHero.com for giving me this wonderful opportunity to give thanks to The Heroes I have met while traveling a road I expected to be dark and desolate.

Author Info

I was born and raised in Missouri, USA. Considered The Midwest, or Heart of America. Near a small town of 900 people, including the farm animals. 30 miles northeast of Kansas City, Missouri. A farm house with corn fields surrounding all sides. Safe and secluded from the real world.

The youngest of 5 boys. That was tough, but a whole other story! My Father died when I was 8 years old, and my Mother passed away when I was 24. Heart Disease took both of my parents, as well as an older brother. He was only 54.

I recently began my fourth decade in my life. I lost my health insurance earlier this year due a premium increase. On August 2nd, 2007, I was diagnosed with cancer. It was only the beginning of the road I never imagined traveling.
