Ellen DeGeneres

by Brooke from Poway

When most people think of a hero, they think of a man in tights and a cape. When I think of a hero, I think of Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen DeGeneres is an inspirational, charitable and giving person. She was born and raised in Metairie, Louisiana. When Ellen was 23 years old, she started her career as a standup comedian, performing at a local coffee shop. Years later, she received her own sitcom "Ellen", which ended years later. In 2003 Ellen started her talk show "The Ellen DeGeneres Show".

Ellen's charitable actions contribute to the reasons why she is my hero. She supports over 30 charities such as Clothes off Our Back, Red Cross, It Gets Better Project etc. Because of Ellen's charitable efforts, she has received many awards. In 2006, Ellen teamed up with Ben Affleck to start the Small Change Campaign. This campaign collects spare change from customers at stores, and donates it to the charity America's Second Harvest.

Ellen DeGeneres is a very inspiring woman. She inspires a lot of the guest one her show with how generous and caring she is. On one episode of her show, Ellen's guest was a 13 year old girl who was diagnosed with two types of cancer. When Ellen asked "Despite what the doctors have said, how do you stay so positive?" (Ellen DeGeneres). Talia replied with "When people ask me that, I say 'What do you want me to be, depressed?'  A little fishy told me, 'Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming." If you didn't know, Ellen voiced a character who quoted that line

Ellen is also a very giving person. Whenever she has a guest on her show, whether they are a celebrity or not, she always has a special gift for them. Whenever there is a guest in need, Ellen always helps them out with the problems they are having, whether that's giving gift cards to grocery stores, or donating a brand new car to families. Ellen regularly has giveaways on her shows to her viewers. Currently she is having several giveaways for tickets to concerts, gift cards, and even diapers for mothers.

In conclusion, Ellen DeGeneres is my hero because of her charitable, inspiring, and giving personality. The way she is shows that she is a person who is not selfish. By her personality you can tell than she cares about other people just as much or even more than she cares about herself.
