"Just Be Happy and, if you can't be happy, do nothing with the people that make you happy"
ESTHER EARL
I chose to read this star won't go out because one of my favourite books is The Fault in Our Stars. Esther Grace Earl inspired John Green to write The Fault in Our Stars. The book I chose is a mix of autobiography and a biography because she died in 2010 and the book was published in 2014. Inside the book is Esther's journal, but her parents put all of her pages together and made a book. This book happens from the beginning of her life to the very end but it mostly happens from when she was diagnosed at the age of 12 to when she died at the age of 16. Did you know that Esther and Hazel (from The Fault in Our Stars) have the same middle name? Esther Grace Earl and Hazel Grace Lancaster. Also, when Esther was little she used to love the monkey bars and when Esther was too sick to walk upstairs because of the advanced state of her thyroid cancer, her parents, Lori and Wayne Earl, turned their dining room into a bedroom and added a temporary wall so that Esther, then 15, could have some privacy. Esther's parents kept her Harry Potter books and they are still in the china cabinet, as is her Harry Potter snow globe and her teddy bear.

Esther Grace Earl was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, and she grew up in Quincy, Massachuetts. Esther's parents are Wayne and Lori Earl. The Earls, who The Boston Globe characterizes as "self-described wanderers", moved between Saudi Arabia, Massachusetts, and France. "While in Massachusetts, she originally resided in Medway before residing in North Quincy and attending North Quincy High School. At the age of 12, in November 2006, in Marseille, Esther was diagnosed with metastasized papillary thyroid cancer. The following Thanksgiving, in 2007, when Esther's parents sought a second opinion at Boston Children's Hospital, Esther's team of doctors informed her and her parents that her cancer was terminal." Esther had a few dreams, she REALLY wanted to be kissed by a boy (other then her dad or her brothers). Also, she really wanted to eat a big lobster before she died and also her biggest dream was to go to the LeakyCon (it was a Harry Potter convention in 2009). Esther Grace Earl did not know what she wanted to be when she grew up. Her thyroid cancer affected her life and that meant that she could not see her friends very often and her parents could rarely see her and she could not touch lips with anyone she wanted to (that was her dream).

Esther Grace Earl faced many challenges in her life. As soon as she got cancer, her whole life changed. She could not leave the hospital without 2 huge oxygen tanks and she could not even leave for Thanksgiving. When Esther got sick, she suffered from bloody noses, breathing troubles (her lungs filled with weird stuff), coughing etc. Unfortunately, Esther died right after she turned 16, but she did manage to survive four whole years with cancer. After Esther died, her parents and John Green founded a This Star Won't Go Out Foundation that got really popular. In one part of the book, Esther's parents took Esther to a restaurant and she ate a huge lobster, but she did not like it very much. The day that Esther died she had a huge nosebleed. Unfortunately, Esther was not very popular or famous until she died. Esther Grace Earl was very lucky because she was alive for four years, but she could have been alive for one day. Esther was very good at sharing because even though she was not a big fan of lobster she told her sister in the car on the way there "even if I don't like the lobster I promise I will share with you". Also Esther was very happy, she was never sad or upset about anything she always had a smile on her face never a frown. Esther loved to be crazy, she would always take selfies on her hospital bed and make silly videos on youtube and post silly pictures on facebook, instagram, etc.
In the end, the part that surprised me the most was when Esther met John Green and they became very good friends. It was because of that John Green wrote The Fault in Our Stars just for her. If I was able to meet her, I would ask her a few questions like does it hurt to have cancer? Are you always sad that you do not get to see your friends everyday and live in your house or is John Green nice? I would not want to be Esther's mother because when she died I would not be able to be happy ever again. I would feel too sad to do anything. I think the book was pretty good but there was one part that I did not like. At the end of everyday, she would write in her diary and after she wrote a page of what happened, her parents would write what would happen in their day. I did not like that very much. Honestly, I did not really learn anything about the book. This book is kind of like what happened to one of my really good friends, Jade. She just had cancer, Leukemia. I think some people would like to read this, but most won't because it is very depressing and for the people that would want to read it, if you read The Fault in Our Stars you would probably like to read this book. I am happy that I chose this book because I found out some things about that person that I had no idea about before. I would not look up to Esther as a role model because she died at such a young age.
