Emily Murphy was born on March 14, 1868 in Cookstown, Ontario. She grows up in Cookstown, Ontario. Her parents were supportive of her receiving an education. Then her husband took everything that she had. First her politician Uncle sparked her that women where not getting treated right by men.

She is remarkable because she wrote books. When she went to publish her book, she would put a fake name and it was Janey Canuck. She was against the use of the drug marijuana. She was the first female ever to be accepted into the order of the British Empire. What shaped her in doing this act were her Uncle and her husband. Some difficult times were when the men said, “Stop trying honey, it’s okay”. And when men said, “You can’t do this”. What helped her get through was when she thought all the women would help. I didn’t think that Emily Murphy made many mistakes when she was doing this work. Emily’s enemies were the men who were hurting her with their words. I think Emily Murphy is a hero because if she would not have done what she did women would not be equal with men. She’s different from a celebrity because she was not buying stuff and running around saying that she was so great. She was working with four other women. They made a Dower Act. It was first in Alberta giving women one third of property rights. Emily Murphy died on October 17, 1933.

My great Grandma was involved in a Women’s organization. The Women's Institute {WI}. My grandmother advanced within the group of Women to president of Alberta. My mother was involved in the girl's group of this org {WIGC} and was President of Alberta. Now my mother is involved with Canadian Women’s Foundation that works to move women out of poverty, protect women from violence and to improve their health. It seems women in history and in my family make change for the better, I know.
