My grandma, Elaine Rose, was a second grade teacher at Delta North Elementary School in Delta, Utah. I've known that grandma was a second grade teacher and I've wanted to follow her footsteps since I was a little girl. When I was small my grandma would always have fun crafts and things for us to do when we visited, and she always kept us busy with these crafts. She also always seemed to enjoy teaching us how to do the crafts, and since I saw her enjoyment in teaching, it interested me as well and ever since I've wanted to become a teacher.

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook website, an elementary school teacher requires at least a bachelor's degree to teach, usually in Elementary Education. Public school teachers must also have a certificate or license from the state. Elementary school teachers teach little kids how to read, and do math to help them in future schooling. According to the same site, the salary for elementary school teachers is around $53,090 per year. This is a fairly decent salary for teachers, and is stable and sustainable. Similar jobs include preschool, middle, and high school teachers, librarians, childcare workers, instructional coordinators, and school principals. Although the job outlook varies by location, it is estimated to grow 12% from 2012 to 2022. Some recent developments in the teaching world include technology in the classroom. Many classrooms now have iPads, or laptops that the students use for assignments.

When Rose was in high school, she was good at math and English, and was class president, prom chairman, and dramatics manager. She worked at her father's drug store two to three nights a week, and was Miss North Sevier in 1965. Therefore, she was very social and worked with other people a lot. This helped for her career, by having experience with being around other people a lot. She also says that, "The most important quality one needs to teach elementary school is to love children. It also helps to be able to sing or play an instrument as music is a wonderful teaching tool to go along with almost any subject. There are many resources available for teachers to help with ideas." This means that teachers need to be loving, and caring, and it also helps to be able to use musical skills to teach students. She also talks about using resources for lessons ideas and plans. She went to the College of Southern Utah, and majored in Elementary Education and minored in Child Development and Biology. She graduated in 1968. The classes she took helped her improve essential skills needed for teaching. She learned more about caring for children, and how to teach them. Her first teaching job was at Beryl Junction Elementary School in Iron County. She worked there for a year after she graduated, then stopped and raised her five children. When her oldest child was 16, she returned to teaching and taught first grade for 27 years at Delta North Elementary School. According to Savannah J., one her students, "Elaine Rose is like a parent, best friend, and a caring teacher." These days, she is now retired and spends time at her cabin with family and friends, plays the organ in church, and does raptor surveys for the BLM (Bureau of Land Management), because she has always loved nature and birds.

Elaine Rose cared for her students tremendously and tried her best to teach them the best she could. She says, "I suppose my biggest fans are my students and their parents. And I will always be their fan also. Teaching is a rewarding career and each child in your classroom becomes special to you forever." Rose is saying that she loves and cares for her students, and how they're her fans, and she's also their fans. She states how while teaching, her students became important and special to her. She taught first grade for a total of 27 years and touched a lot of students' lives. She loves her students, and her students love her. She has impacted their lives and prepared them for their futures.

To become an elementary school teacher, I will need to get good grades in high school, and become educated about many different subjects to teach. I will continue to play the violin and piano, to use them to teach in my career. When I'm older, I also hope to be able to gain experience by becoming a student teacher or a teacher assistant in college. I want to major in elementary education and minor in something to do with art and mathematics. I'm not sure what college I want to attend yet, but I'm looking and considering some schools. I want to follow in my grandmother's footsteps, and become as a great of a teacher as she was. Elaine Rose touched many of her students' lives, and I hope to be able to do the same.
