Elie Wiesel was born in Romania on September 30, 1928. He is the son of Sarah Feig and Chlomo and the brother of Hilda, Bea, and Tzipora Wiesel. In 1944, at the age of 16, Wiesel and his family were forced into a concentration camp. His camp was liberated a year later. Unfortunately, most of his family didn't make it out, but Elie escaped to France.
At first, Wiesel worked as a journalist, but refused to write about his experiences at his concentration camp. However, he was later inspired to write and currently has about 60 books published. He began working with many foundations and established a few of his own, including the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity and he serves as the Founding Chairman of the President's Commission of the Holocaust as well as working at Boston University as the Professor of Humanities. He has also won a Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a Congressional Gold Medal. He is currently 84 years old, living with his wife, Marion Ester Rose, and his son, Elisha Wiesel.
