You may know about the ongoing war in Iraq. All of those brave heroes fighting for us. The brave man I am writing about is one of those heroes. He has saved many lives; healed many people, and is someone who should be honored for his big heart. He is one of the many everyday heroes who lives among us. Most people don’t even realize the dangers this man has been through to save lives.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama on May 9th, 1925, Frank Dillard is a hero we should all look up to. He was making fifty- seven cents an hour working on a railroad track when he decided to join the Army. "It was one of the best decisions I ever made," said Frank. The army gave fifty dollars a month, 3 meals a day, and a place to sleep.

In 1942, he graduated from Montgomery’s Booker T. Washington High School. He told himself he needed to finish school before he joined the Army. In 1948, he joined the Army Reserves, and went back to work for the railroad.

After a while he joined the Air Force. He flew to Alaska to give the needy food and clothes he had collected. The first time he flew, there a huge windstorm that nearly killed him. That didn't stop him from going back again. He retired from the Air Force on September 30th, 1986, at 75 years old. This man is truly a hero and will be honored for many years.

He is a hero to me because he sacrificed himself for other people. That shows a true hero. His connection to me is that, without him and many other people like him that served in war, I wouldn't have my freedom today.
