Since 1982, Dr. Frank Flanner, MD, has gone to Haiti to help the gaunt, sick inhabitants of Haiti. Born right after WWII, he is a hardy, high-spirited man who blooms like a snapdragon. He inputs creole phrases into his common speech, making for a run time trying to learn what he said.
Someday I want to travel to Haiti with him and help others. Many episcopal churches like mine have an outreach program like St. Paul's and our partner congregation Ste. Hillare petite Riviare. We also help them with school because they only go up to 6th grade and it costs about 10 dollars a year which is about a quarter of the salary of the average Haitian. Of this, most Haitians use it to buy bottled water which is much better than the disease-ridden river water.
He has plenty of experience in the medical field and tells THE FUNNIEST stories about his experiences. He and the others of his team had to ride in the back of a truck in 100+ degree weather for 40 miles across rickety bridges.
Dr. Flanner helps all the people by giving vaccinations for Tuberculosis, Polio, Influenza, Tetanus, Diphtheria. Minor heart problems are treated at the clinics. He has done plenty of things for the country where 35 is considered elderly. While the young children often steal from the medical team, they never bring anything they're not prepared to lose!
Dr. Flanner has helped better the country of Haiti but he can't do it alone. Help the Haitians. I plan to do so in the future.
