Fred Hollows

by Daniel and Matthew from Lodi

On April 9, 1929 our hero was born. His name was Fred Hollows. He was born to Joseph and Charice in Dunedin, New Zealand.  Growing up he had five siblings.  He had three brothers and two sisters.  Because Fred was like his grandfather so his parents named him after his grandfather.

Fred lived in Dunedin for most of his early life. He attended Palmerston Boys High School. In school his favorite subject was science. He attended this high school with his three brothers who he usually got along with.

Fred got married in 1958 to Mary Skiller. A few years later they moved to Australia and became an Ophthalmologist or eye doctor, at University of New South Wales. At the age of thirty-six he was head of the eye department in Sydney. A few years later his wife died when he was going back to Australia to help children with their eyes. In Australia Fred prescribed 10,000 glasses and helped 30,000 people with their eyesight.

Fred helped thousands of people with there eyesight. He also prevented unnecessary blindness. It is for this reason that we chose Fred Hollows as our hero. Here is a verse that describes him. Isaiah 42:16: I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.
