Frank Thomas was born on May 27, 1968 in Columbus Georgia. Frank had five brothers and little sister named Pamela, and his parents were Frank and Charlie Mae Thomas. When Frank was just a boy in school his sister Pamela became very sick with leukemia and ended up dying a couple of months later. This was one of the hardest things Frank and his parents had ever been through because Frank was very close to his little sister. It took Frank and his family months to get over this tragedy. Frank still says he has never forgotten that moment and he said that a day never passes when he doesn’t think of his little sister Pamela.
Frank Thomas had a very hard childhood. When he was little he got picked on a lot by the kids at his school. He also wasn’t treated very fairly by his brothers because Frank was playing sports and his older brothers said that he would never get far in baseball, basketball or football and this really hurt him because it was his dream to be a major athlete. Frank went into high school playing football, basketball, and baseball. These were all of Frank’s favorite sports and he loved them all about the same.
In high school, Frank was a major athlete. He loved everything about the sports he played, but he knew he wanted to go Pro in one of them; he just didn’t know which one he wanted to go for the most. He first tried basketball for his freshmen and sophomore year of high school, he was pretty good, but he wasn’t really sure if that’s what he wanted to go all the way for. Then he tried football, which he also loved. Football was one his most favorite sports. He tried out for the varsity football team, and he made it but he was second string. Frank didn’t really like this much because he only got to go in the game four times in the whole first season. He decided to try out for the high school baseball team.
Frank made the varsity team and he wasn’t too bad! After Frank’s first game his coach was extremely impressed. Frank’s coach said Frank was one of the best walk-on players he had ever seen. Near the end of his school, Frank had become one of the best baseball players in the state.
Frank graduated from high school and was heading off to play baseball for Auburn University. He had become one of the best players in the country. Frank had done amazing for freshmen at Auburn University as a walk on baseball player. Frank's coach had said Frank was probably the best player he had ever seen as a first string batter. Frank Thomas was outstanding throughout college. He had become the best player for the country and already held tons of records. Frank’s college years were coming to an end and he had done outstanding but it was time to be looking forward to becoming a pro, Frank’s lifelong dream. Frank had worked so hard to become a professional athlete, Frank admitted that he worked so hard that it was one of the most challenging things has ever faced.
Frank had been watching the professional draft picks to see if he would ever get drafted to a team. Frank waited two days and nobody picked him. Frank said this was one of the hardest things that has ever happened to him, other then when his little sister died. But a day later, the coach of the Chicago White Sox gave Frank a call asking him if he wanted to play for them, to give Frank a second chance. Frank accepted the offer with no thought at all and he knew that he needed to work harder than ever before. Frank started the 1990 season with a good start. His coach was pretty impressed for a rookie batter. Frank had been doing great in the pros. he had earned the Most Valuable Player Award two years in a row in the 1993 season and in the 1994 season, Which was a huge accomplishment. He even earned the name, The Big Hurt for how hard and far he could hit the ball. Frank had become probably the fourth best player in the American baseball league. Some people said he was better than Babe Ruth!
Frank was a huge hero because when he signs autographs he only asks for one dollar to give to help little children in need who have leukemia. He did this because he knows how hard it is to go through this kind of thing and he wanted to help other children in need.
I think Frank Thomas is a great hero for what he did for other children and is a great example of a very hard and disciplined worker and somebody who reached his dreams even though everybody told him he never was going to, but Frank managed to reach even higher in his dreams by being one of the best ball players to ever live.
