King Faisal was born in present day Saudi Arabia in 1883, in Mecca. King Faisal grew up in Istanbul and learned about leadership from his father.
King Faisal wanted to stop Sunni and Shiite from fighting. Iraq and Syria were under European rule, specifically the French and British. He wanted to create a country that would include Iraq and Syria. King Faisal was a hero because he helped the people in Iraq and Syria to stop fighting. Other Arabs were sometime hostile to his ideas.
King Faisal was a king in Syria in 1920 but later become king of Iraq for 12 years (1921-1933). He tried to build an oil pipeline so oil could go from one country to an other. King Faisal become the king of Iraq in 1921. He was made the king of Iraq because he spoke about the importance of independence from the Europeans and for a stronger Arab nation. King Faisal was a hero in Iraq for some of the people because he became a king in Iraq and he helped all the people in Iraq. And he wanted to unite the Arab countries of the fertile crescent.
King Faisal made his dream come true because the people in Iraq liked what he was doing. After 12 years later he died. A square is named in his honor in Baghdad. That is his award in Iraq for doing all that work.
