Brett Favre

by Paul from Leawood

Who has the NFL record for most consecutive games started? The answer is Brett Favre, the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers who has started 209 consecutive games. He not only is a great football player but he cares about his hometown, Kiln, Mississippi.

This legend all started back on October 10, 1969, in Gulfport, Mississippi, when Brett Lorenzo Favre was born. He went Hancock North Central High School in Kiln, Mississippi. This tiny town has no stoplights and no paved roads. Favre was quarterback, strong safety, kicker and punter for the team that was coached by his father Irvin Favre.

Favre has gone through some very tough times where he needed to persevere, but sometimes people get in situations where they just can’t do anything to save themselves: this was one of those situations. It was July 14,1990 and Favre came very close to ending his career and maybe even his life. He was going around a turn, a little ways from his parents house, and his car went out of control and it flipped three times and crashed into a tree where it got stuck. Only after his brother came to smash the window with a gold club, was he able to get out and go to the hospital. Favre left the hospital after the doctor removed 30 inches from his small intestine.

He was drafted in the second round, 33 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1991 NFL draft. He was second string quarterback and did not have the most impressive numbers for the falcons. He also had a knack for partying, which did not help his publicity. He also got in repeated fights with head coach Jerry Glanville. The most popular moment of Brett’s Atlanta career is when he missed the team photo because he was out partying the night before and was fined for that.

Packer general manager Ron Wolf finally took a chance on the young man and traded his first round pick for Brett and this trade is now known for one of the most lopsided trades in sports history. There were some obstacles that Brett had to go through to become a Packer. During his physical, after the trade, he was diagnosed with avascular necrosis, which is the same hip condition that ended Bo Jackson’s career. But Wolf was determined to have Favre on the team. He overruled the doctor’s and the Packers would never be the same.

During his career Brett has had some pretty amazing feats and records, but one of the most impressive is his first complete game. He completed his first pass to himself. The pass was deflected by Ray Seals of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the ball went right back to Favre and he caught the ball and went down for a loss of seven yards. He has started every game since that day (September 20,1992) when Don Majkowski got hurt against the Bengals, he went into that game, threw a touchdown and led the Packers to a victory and was so excited that he almost foregot that he was supposed to be the extra point holder.

Since then he has only won one Super Bowl, been named to eight pro-bowls, and has won the MVP award a record three times, and has been through some tough times. Like on December 22, 2003 on Monday night, the day after his father died, he threw for four touchdowns and got a standing ovation from the tough fans from Oakland. He also had to play a very emotional game after his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Recently his home town was very close to Hurricane Katrina and was greatly effected by it. He donated $189,000 to a hurricane relief fundation. He has also donated to many other foundations during his storied career.

Brett Favre is my hero for many reasons. He’s a great football player, great person who always finds ways to give back to the community by his time and money. He has always worked hard and demonstrated many of the key virtues that a hero muust have. These are the reasons Brett Favre makes a great hero.
