Firefighters

by Susan from Cookstown, Canada

I never get bored of being a firefighter!

Is your house on fire? Are your children screaming for help? Do you smell smoke? Well, sounds like you need a firefighter to come save you!

Our definition of a hero is someone who is brave and willing to do anything for justice. They are able to save lives (take action) without thinking twice, putting the safety of others before their own. Firefighters plunge into a sea of flames and risk their lives to save yours! They are such brave souls and they need credit! That’s why we decided to write about firefighters!

Our first reason of why firefighters are our heroes is because they save many lives and do tons of heroic actions. If they can’t put the fire out on time and there are people trapped inside, they will go into the burning building and attempt to use search and rescue techniques and strategies to save them. When a firefighter goes into a burning building, sometimes they will die in the process of saving the people. Other times it is the opposite. The people will die and the firefighters will live. But, unfortunately, sometimes both die. In reality, many firefighters have had to do this before and doing that just proves how brave and strong firefighters are! Firefighters truly are heroes!

Another reason of why we think firefighters are heroes is because they help their community without having to think about it twice. With all their training, firefighters are trained to save lives. Firefighters usually put their community ahead of them, and if they get a call they will stop whatever they’re doing and will quickly arrive at the scene. For the My Hero film, we interviewed a fireman named Steven Bradley. When we questioned Steven of what inspired him to become a firefighter, he responded by saying, “just to help my community and serve within my community.” Being a firefighter also affects their daily family lives. We asked Steven, “Does your job affect your daily family life?” Steven answered with, “Yes, quite a bit! I miss a lot of meals and sometimes I’m even late for work, etc. Some days I spend more time at the firehouse than I do at home.” Steven told us that since he has been a firefighter for about 29 years, his family gets used to the sudden calls in the middle of the night or their dinner getting interrupted by important calls.

Our final reason of why firefighters are our heroes is because they are strong, brave, and courageous and respected. They are strong because of their training. Strength is needed to be able to carry/use their equipment, and to be strong when there is a bad situation and not give up; to keep hope for the people who were in the fire or who were injured. Firefighters are courageous for a ton of reasons. They have a lot of courage and we think that is an important ability to have if you are a firefighter. Also, firefighters not only fight out fires, but they appear at car crashes and other bad situations. Firefighters are respected world wide for the noble and brave actions they do and the responsibilities they hold. You can always count on firefighters.

The My Hero film gave us the opportunity to interview a real life firefighter and even put on firefighter equipment. Firefighters are and will always be our heroes. For the following reasons shown above (and more) firefighters are our heroes.
