George Washington Carver

by Nolan from Illinois

Do you know who was born on July 12th in Diamond Grove, Missouri? That’s right it was my hero George Washington Carver. He is my hero because he shows us even though someone was born a slave they can amount to great things.

George was too frail to work in the field, but he did posses great interest in plants. He was very eager to learn about plants. He made his own little garden near the woods. He liked to talk to the plants and was soon given the nickname The Plant Doctor.

George Washington Carver

He was denied a formal education at Highland University because of his race. He was accepted into Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, in 1890. He had 300 uses for the peanut, 175 for sweet potato, and 60 for the pecan. Some of his inventions he kept saying, “God gave them to me why should I sell them?” Thomas Edison asked him to move to Orange Grove, New Jersey, to work at the Edison Laudatories. He worked there for a salary of $100,000 per year! He said no to this generous offer and continued to his work at Tusken.

George Washington Carver is my hero because he shows us no matter what your past is, or where you grow up, you can always make something of your life. You can be any type of person and amount to something. That is why he is my hero.
