Gabrielle Douglas

by Mya H from Mooresville

My hero is Gabrielle Douglas because she worked really hard to become a gymnast and to win a gold medal in the Olympics.

I know Gabrielle because I saw her on the 2012 Olympics in the gymnastics category. Gabrielle is one of the first African American gymnasts to win a medal in the Olympics. Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas was born on December 31, 1995 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Gabrielle started gymnastics when she was six years old. Gabrielle followed her sister Arielle's footsteps to become a gymnast.

Gabrielle is my hero because she has inspired me to be the best that I can be at dance. Gabby is very talented and intelligent even though she quit school for a full time scholarship in gymnastics. She tells us to believe in ourselves and work hard and do our best. At age 14 Gabrielle and her family moved from Virginia Beach to West Des Moines, Iowa to train under Liang Chow, who is the former coach of 2007 World Champion and 2008 Summer Olympics gold medalist Shawn Johnson. Gabrielle was home schooled by her host family. Her teammates are hardworking. They are McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, Gabrielle Douglas, and Jordan Wieber. They are nicknamed the (Fierce Five.)

Other people could learn that Gabrielle worked hard to win gold in the Olympics and that they should work just as hard to accomplish what they want to. Gabrielle changed my life by showing that she was positive even when she didn't win a medal. And she was also positive to different the people that lost when she won a medal. She probably lost because the people that won might have had more training. She is a wonderful person and I am glad that Gabrielle Douglas is my hero. I think that she is very important.
