Giada De Laurentiis

by Carmen from Mission Viejo

"If people are made to feel uncomfortable in the kitchen, they won't go in there. That''s why I think children learning to cook can be such a wonderful thing" GIADA DE LAURENTIIS

Everyone has a different hero. My hero, as far as a career, is the amazing cook, Giada De Laurentiis. She would cook for her family and make healthy foods, desserts and other meals for any occasion. I first became aware of her when I was little, my mom and I would always watch her cook or other people that cook, but Giada De Laurentiis was the one we saw the most. "Everyday Italian" is the name of the show we would watch when we were done with our chores. Even when we were at the hospital and my third sister was already born in Mission Viejo Hospital, we would watch the cooking channel instead of cartoons. What attracts me most about her is what she cooks and how she cooks it, everyone would have a certain way to cook something. I am a current freshmen in Capistrano High School in Mission Viejo, California and i am considering to be good in math and in my spare time i like to bake and cook after school. The only thing that I would be similar to the person for my career is baking, I like to bake a lot I already know how to bake a few desserts that my mom taught me.

If I am going to make my career being a chef. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook Website, how to become a chef or head cook I would have to do  cooking and baking programs in college, but I would have to have a high school diploma for the programs. The program would be like practicing my cooking skills that would be able to cover all the basic things in the kitchen and also how to use the kitchen tools. Some of the job related tasks would be to work at any type of food restaurant.  Some of the qualities for it would be communication skills, business skills, creativity, time-management skills and the last one is the sense of taste and smell. The salary range would be about $41,610. Some similar related careers would be food service managers, food workers, bakers, or just regular cooks. A recent development is the growing popularity on television of competitive cooking shows like chefs with other chefs and bakers with bakers; or just some chefs would make a cooking show for people.

Some of the aptitude for young people that would need some skills to be successful would be math, some science. In April 11, 2016 some chefs or people would say that some required skills and traits for being a successful chef includes being creative, determination, organization. You need to have good skills in communication, business, and leadership to effectively work with your staff. Giada De Laurentiis was born in Rome, Italy, in August 1970, worked in two restaurants and then from there she started to become a food stylist, and started to write articles of her own. In 2010 she started her new cooking series named "Giada at Home", and wrote a book with the same title. Now she is still working on the same job she has on her cooking show for people.

Giada De Laurentiis helps contribute to society by teaching others how to cook, like different styles of cooking and cook all sorts of Italian food. She shows all recipes on her cooking show and it lasts for half an hour every day. She wrote cooking books as well that would have food recipes for any occasion. Mostly the recipes would have healthy food for kids and food for grown-ups and she would write different books of certain recipes. Her first book is called "Everyday Italian" and "Giada's Family Dinners" and three other books she has written have different Italian recipes. In 2012 she was partnered at The Kitchen Community where she and other people would help kids connect with food and help make a small garden that would have vegetables and herbs; and with the food they grow they cook with and make meals for the kids. Giada De Laurentiis also serves for "The Pink Committee of The Pink Party" that raises to about $9 million dollars in 9 years for the " Cedars-Sinai Women's Cancer Program" at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Institute. It's one of the top ten countries women's cancer problems, and others like children who have cancer.

I can begin following the path of my personal career hero by practicing my cooking skills and by taking Regional Occupational Program courses on restaurant careers and management; if I get a class for baking it would be one more step to becoming a cook and from there I would get better at cooking in the future. I would go to Saddle Back College in Mission Viejo for about two years. After completing my general education requirements, I plan to transfer to the Art Institution of Orange County so I can complete their culinary program so I can cook food and bake. I would be able to learn more about cooking food, baking and how to decorate cakes and other desserts. Giada De Laurentiis inspires me because she not only can cook amazing meals for her family, but can also make a very successful career with her culinary skills.
