Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbander, India in 1869. In 1888 he went to study law in London. When he finished Gandhi went to South Africa and took part in a major non-violent protest against the Transvaal government. Soon after he returned to India and joined the congress movement.
Gandhi was soon using passive protest against the British government. He was protesting the British so called "right" to tax and govern his people unfairly. He also refused to use violent protests as he felt that they would invoke a negative reaction from the British government.
Gandhi began the All-India Trade Congress so that his people could trade with each other without being taxed or fined by the British government. Gandhi ran this congress for many years.
Next Gandhi set up a walk to the sea to get salt for his people as the British were taxing them too heavily on this good. He tried his best to get salt from the biggest source that the British could not control.
Finally Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu fanatic with deep prejudices against Gandhi, at a prayer meeting. This man was a huge influence on the society of India and helped to free his people even though this freedom did not come until many years after.
