A hero is a person who stands up for his beliefs and fights for the good of people. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is all this and more. He was man of greatness. He helped his people become free from the colonization of the British. He did a lot of non-violent protesting and carried out a lot of acts called Satyagraha, which are non-violent acts. Though he struggled a lot, in the end he still persevered.

He was still a young person when he adopted many of his well known traits. At a young age he learned not to lie and took an oath against lying which he never broke. He stuck to his principles even when things were hard. Whenever he would take a vow, he would always keep it. Once, when he and his wife were in jail; his wife had gotten very ill. For her to get better Gandhi asked her to give up salt and pulses in food. She did not want to give it up because it was a hard thing for her. At once, Gandhi in an attempt to help her give it up took a vow: `Well, I won't take salt and pulses for a year.' He not only carried out his word but, did it for ten whole years.

He was a brave man, though he fought back with non-violence. His life was dedicated to human liberation. In his life of truth and non-violence, he could dissolve the differences between individuals, countries and continents. He did a lot of fasting for the good of India and to help other people. For example, on June 29, 1941 he fasted for communal unity. This is just one of his many fasts and non-violent protests that he did during his lifetime. It was truly a terrible thing when he was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic. In India and throughout the whole world, he will always be remembered.
