Georgian Heroes

by Eka from Sachkhere

Late on June 13 20015, following the hours of heavy rainfall, a landslide was released above the village of Akhaldaba, about 20 km southwest of Tbilisi. The landslide carried 1 million m3 of land, mud and trees. It moved down into Tbilisi and dammed up the Vere river. The resulting flood inflicted severe damage on the Tbilisi zoo, Heroes square, Mziuri park and nearby streets and houses. Resulting in at least 20 deaths. At night many student went to the flooded places and began helping them. I think they really are heroes. On the morning of June 14, all of the Georgians went to the flooded place and began cleaning and helping people and animals in need. Soon many people joined them. Someone transfered money, some gave their clothes and many things, some people began collecting food, water and other necessary things. The following week was an incredible act of solidarity. Thousand of youngsters from Georgia and aboard volunteered to help affected families and clean the city's mud-drenched streets. The youngest hero was Nika Nikoladze, he sent a letter to one little boy whose family had lost their house in flood. The letter read: " I'm sending you my moneybox. I had been saving for Disneyland but continue it now. We can go there together later!" I think these people who helped people in need are real heroes.
