John Herschel Glenn, Jr.

by Eli from Leawood

My hero was a Marine, Navy, and Air Force pilot in WWII, and in the Korean War, a senator for Ohio, and a test pilot. His name is John Herschel Glenn Jr. John was the first man from the U.S. to orbit Earth. He snuck applesauce up in space in a tube and ate it. Then at 77 years old he went back up into space to see if space would impact him. He never stopped working.

Both times in space he said, “One G (for gravity) and I feel fine.” Another Quote he said was “(A) hero...is somebody who is so preeminent in his or her field that it benefits other people and our country. These heroes have dedicated themselves to something that is very important to everybody and their own affairs have become secondary.” And also he said, "As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind: Every part of this capsule was supplied by the lowest bidder." CNN called him “NASA’s guinea pig” the second time he went into space. I call him “A Daredevil.”

He met his childhood hero, Charles Lindbergh, when training for the Marines. He really acted like the marine slogan “The Proud, The Few, The Marines,” because he was proud of being a Marine.

John was born July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio, a small town. That means he is 84 years old now!

All of this is why John Glenn is my hero.
