“Every human being, of whatever origin, of whatever station, deserves respect. We must each respect others even as we respect ourselves.” *~* Ulysses S. Grant*~*

Ulysses Simpson Grant is an inspiration. He was a general of our United States Army and our President. I admire Ulysses S. Grant for his bravery and what he has done for our country.

Ulysses S. Grant was a military general and a great American president. He was born on the twenty-seventh of April in the year 1822. He was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio and he was given the name Hiram Ulysses Grant. His parents’ names were Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant. He and his family later moved to Georgetown, Ohio. Ulysses lived there for sixteen years. Jesse was disappointed in his oldest son. He was upset that, in his eyes, Ulysses didn't show much potential. To escape having to work in his father's tannery business, he began to work on a farm that his father owned. He became very good at handling horses.

When Ulysses was sixteen when he was sent to boarding school in Kentucky. When he got home to Ohio, his father decided to send him to military school in New York. When Ulysses arrived at West Point Military School, he was seventeen years old, five feet and one inch, and weighed one hundred twenty pounds. Ulysses did not like the military at all and was scared of failing in school.

In 1848, Ulysses S. Grant graduated from West Point and become a second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Ulysses fought in the Mexican War and won two brevets. The brevets were given to him for meritorious conduct at Molino del Rey and Chapultepec. After the War, he served in Michigan, Oregon, and California.

He began to miss his family and resigned from the Military in 1854. In April of 1861, the Civil War began and Ulysses was needed back. Ulysses won the Battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga. In 1864, Ulysses was named Lieutenant General and appointed General in Chief of the Armies of the United States. In 1866, Ulysses was made a Four Star General. This was the first time that rank was ever appointed.

After the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant was voted President of the United States of America. He served our country as Brigadier General, Lieutenant General and, finally, President in just eight years. Ulysses was President for two terms.

At the age of 63, Ulysses S. Grant died in Mount McGregor, New York. It was July 23, 1885.

He served and protected our country for his entire life and to me he will always be a hero!
