When a hero comes to mind I think Spiderman or Superman, but going into deeper thought, I knew a hero for me was someone I knew and loved. To me a hero is someone who is not only inspirational, but is also someone who pushes you to do things that you normally would never dream of doing. A hero is, my dad.

On December 13, a boy was born in a town called Kingston, New York. My father, Eugene “Guy” Thomas Gormley grew up in a small town known as Phoenicia, New York. He has 3 siblings, 2 sisters and 1 brother. He and his oldest sister are Irish twins, meaning they were born in the same calendar year. As a child my dad was interested in only a few things, horseback riding, school, and the military. Starting at a very young age my dad knew he wanted to serve his country and serve is what he does best. When he would play as a child he would take out the little toy soldiers and set them up and have a war, so he was always destined to have a career in the military.

He went to a Catholic high school in Hurley, New York, where his Aunt Catherine was the principal. Here he ran Cross Country for four years and lettered for 2 of the years. When he was in 10th grade he was named MVP for that season. Having this Cross Country experience my dad has inspired me to run, starting in 7th grade. Since then he has been giving me tips and workouts to make me a better runner. It is one of the many ways that I see my father as my hero.

For his four college years he attended VMI (Virginia Military Institute)there he majored in history, another one of his many passions. When he was there he met my mom. The day before she graduated from college they got married in the chapel there on the VMI campus. Then a few weeks later they moved to Germany.

Starting in his military career, he proved to be one of the best; his soldiers looked up to him. I think anyone who has ever met my father, has looked up to him. Since childhood, his dream was to make it to the top, and my dad is well on his way to doing that. He is currently the battalion commander of the 29th infantry division. I think that it was the proudest day of his life and mine when he took command. Just the look on his face it almost made me want to enlist, almost, not quite. Unfortunately, when he took command he had to live away from home, four out of the seven days in the week. But it is worth it to be able to spend Mondays with him; we can watch “Heroes” (The Show) together again. He has inspired me to do so many things, to me he is the most inspiring person I know

When he and I go scuba dive, no one else can intrude. It is true father daughter time. When we were getting certified, he pulled a prank on me. He said he ran out of air, but he didn’t. Even though we were under water and doing something that could potentially kill us, he still had his sense of humor. My father is, and always will be, one of the funniest people that I know. I also love his laugh. When it is his whole family in NY and we are all together and laughing we sound like one because our laughs are all the same. It is very funny and a great way to spend time with my family.

My father and I are very close, and we spend a lot of time together, but he is also very good at what he does and his work is very important to him. He is my hero because of what he does and how he carries himself. Not only is he an influential person but he is also a great dad. This is why my dad is and always will be my hero.
