Hana Brady

by Dina from Ljubljana

Hana Brady was a 13-year old Jewish girl, who lived with her parents and brother in Nove Mesto in Czechoslovakia when the World War 2 started. Before the war, Hana was really normal, happy girl, who lived with her family in their family house in center of Novo Mesto. She loved to play with her friends and with their dog.

But, then, when the war started, everything changed for the Brady family, just because they were Jewish. First, they needed to wear yellow stars so people can see that they are Jewish. Hana hated them, but without them, she couldn't leave the house. But, as the time passed, children weren't allowed to go to school, parks or any other public places anymore.

Then, one day, their father got arrested and taken away by the Nazis, and few days after that, their mother was taken away, too. Hana and her brother had to move to their aunts. But then, a letter came and children were taken away, too. Hana celebrated her 13th birthday in stockroom full with other Jewish people, waiting to be deported somewhere, they don't know where.

When was time to deport the children, they were in separated houses and Hana was suffering a lot. Every extra food she got, she kept for her brother, to keep him strong and healthy. At the beginning, Hana was not allowed to leave the house, so she stayed all day, thinking of her parents and her brother, hoping that the things will get back how they used to be. Then, their grandmother was deported, too. Children were very happy, but than they saw that their grandma isn't getting any food and that she's very sick, so they tried to make her feel better. But, the grandma didn't make it, so she died. It was tragic to Hana and her brother, but to every other person, it was normal. Death was everywhere, so the children had to move on. One of the women who was in Hana's house was a teacher so they had classes at the roof of the building, where they draw and sang, but the Nazis didn't know about that. Then, as the time passed, Hana had one hour weekly to see her brother, so she always gave him all the food and she couldn't wait to see him.

They lived like that for two years and then, one day, Hana's name appeared on the list for deportation. She taught that she will meet her brother again and that things will get back to normal. They got into a train and traveled like that for hours and hours, not knowing where are they going.Hana's friends tried to make Hana feel better by singing her their songs, and Hana really felt at the moment like she is home. But it didn't last. She ended in a gas chambers a few hours after her arrival in Auschwitz concentration camp. She died there on October 23rd 1944. Her brother survived just because he learned how to be a plumber. Their parents died, too. George thought that he will see his sister again a long time after the war. But that, when she didn't came back, he realised she's gone. So, when the children from Tokyo asked him for help about some information about Hana, he was really happy that after 50 and more years, someone is still caring about his sister's life.
