Heather Houston

by Brooke from Victoria

My hero was born and raised in Victoria; Heather was born in the Victoria Jubilee Hospital. She grew up in the View Royal, which is a suburb of Victoria and she attended the View Royal Elementary School. Then Heather went to the Esquimalt High School that went from grades 9 to 12. She furthered her studies when she attended office school for six months. She was an office worker at the Yorkshire Trust until she was 20.

Heather was a part of the Victoria Girl's Drill team. You had to be 16, in able to join. (When got married you had to leave). You got measured for height (5’2in.-5’8in) and weight. You had a six week training program, and then a test for posture and the way you marched. Many didn’t pass. The Drill team practiced once a week, but more if they went on a trip or in a parade.

Heather married Larry Houston. On their honeymoon they went to Disneyland. Heather and Larry had 3 children: Dan, Lisa, and Mark.

When interviewing Heather I asked her the following questions.

• The most historical event of her life was having three children, at the same time as her husband having business, as well as having a boat and taking trips.

• The biggest change in people's everyday lives is that we have no time to sit down and smell the roses, no one has time for their children anymore.

• The best years of her life so far has been having a good childhood, meeting her husband at 17 and having three children. Also, she is still strong and healthy and still having good years. • How are young people today different from when you grew up? - Heather's Mom was at home when she grew up. Now everyone has a cell phones and everyone needs to get more exercise!

• Advice for us when we come to our old age? - Try to keep fit, eat healthy, and keep money for old age.

• Being the age you are, have you experienced any negativity? - Yes, we don’t think the same way as young people. Most everyone is respectful.

• What is one thing that you would want to wish for the world? - Peace and contentment.

• How old would you like to live? As long as the quality of life is there, but 80 would be a nice age.

Heather Houston is my Grandma; she is a great influence on me and everyone around. She is a fabulous cook. She keeps her house spotless. She has a Bichon Frise boy dog named Kodi. She also has three grandchildren.

Heather Houston would like to finish off with a Quote: Stay true to yourself and treat others how you would want to be treated.

My Grandma is my hero because she is a fabulous cook, and I love her to bits and pieces. She always does things for everyone else except for her. So it was time that she got recognized! That is why I picked her as my Hero.
