Himura Kenshin

by Katherine from Fresno

Himura Kenshin is the protagonist in the manga Rurouni Kenshin who tries to find atonement for his sins as the legendary assassin Hitokiri Battosai.

Himura Kenshin, (first name Kenshin) is the main protagonist of the Japanese manga Rurouni Kenshin created by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Rurouni Kenshin is set in a fictional version of Japan during the early Meiji period. After participating in the Bakumatsu war as the assassin Hitokiri Battosai, Kenshin becomes a wandering samurai, wielding a reverse-blade sword and offering protection to those in need as atonement for the murders he commited. When he travels to Tokyo, he meets Kamiya Kaoru, the female instructor of the Kamiya-Kasshin-ryu kendo school, who offers him a place to stay at her dojo despite knowing that he is the legendary Hitokiri Battosai. Throughout the series, Kenshin forms lifelong relationships with many people and finds atonement for his past as Battosai.

There are many reasons as to why Himura Kenshin is my hero. One reason is because of his strength. Be it physically or emotionally, Kenshin is someone who is very strong. Kenshin is extraordinarily agile. He inherited the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu sword style, a sword style based on battojutsu, from his master which allows him to employ superhuman speed and reflexes, predict his opponent's moves during a battle, and perform lethal sword techniques. However, he has modified these techniques so that they won't kill others.

Kenshin is someone who, throughout the series, gradually changes. Kenshin is shown as a soft-spoken and humble person who always puts others before himself. He shows an appreciation for life, despite holding his own life as cheap, and doesn't allow himself to get close to those around him to keep them from being involved with his troubles. However, he eventually learns to trust others with the truth about him and some of his worries. He forms lifelong relationships with many people and learns to value his life, realizing that his friends would suffer if he were to die.

Himura Kenshin is my hero because he willingly helps others. He doesn't hesitate to help others out when they are in trouble, or just need help. He does not hesitate to put himself in danger to protect those around him. Kenshin also has a likeable personality. He is soft-spoken, humble and serene. He is usually very calm and polite, refering to others with the honoric "-dono." He refrains from using his combat strength for himself and only draws his sword for the safety of others.

For me Himura Kenshin is a true hero. He is someone who has gone through many difficulties in life, yet, despite it all, he is able to carry on living. To me this shows that he is a strong person, someone who can go through many challenges and come out just fine. Himura Kenshin has shown me that no matter how difficult things get, if you can overcome that obstacle, then you are a strong person. He has also shown me that you can always change yourself. If you are unhappy or feel guilty about things you have done in your past, you can always try to make things right. As long as you are trying your best to make things right, even if the outcome turns out bad, you will likely feel less guilty. In my opinion, Himura Kenshin is one of the greatest heroes.
