Hannah Senesh

by Rebecca from Buffalo

Hannah Sense once said, “One needs something to believe in, something for which one can have whole-hearted enthusiasm. One needs to feel that one's life has meaning, that one is needed in this world.”

Hannah Senesh is a true Heroine because she was a Jew and left for Palestine to get a better education in college. She yearned to do much more. And then, she was accepted by the British Air Force to be part of one of the most courageous, and dangerous rescue attempts of World War II. And she died fighting for freedom for all the Jews. But the most important reason why Hannah Senesh is a Heroine is because she always had something to believe in, and her whole-heart was to believe in that something. Hannah felt the meaning of life. She believed in the meaning of life. As you can see, Hannah Senesh is a true Heroine in my eyes and to other eyes for being a Brave, Daring, Courageous, and Intelligent young women.

Hannah Senesh was born in 1922, in Budapest. Hannah had only one brother, George Senesh, and her mom and dad, Bela Senesh and Catherine Sense. Hannah’s Dad was a writer; he wrote poetry and plays. Hannah loved her dad. She wanted to be just like her dad. She wanted to be a poet, and a play writer. But, when Hannah was only six years of age her father died, and it was just her brother, mom, and she. Hannah’s mom was a stay at home mom. Mrs. Senseh didn’t do the cleaning up around the house. Hannah’s family had a maid that did all their work. Hannah’s Brother was very close to Hannah; he was a year older than her and was a grade ahead of her. Her brother and she became really close after their father died. Now, Hannah’s Family was Jewish so her brother and she didn’t get the best education. But they both went through school and both of them went to college. Her brother left to go to Paris for college and Hannah left to go to Palestine where Jews got a better education and they weren’t treated differently; they were treated equally. As she arrived at Palestine she felt as if she was finally home. As the years went on, and the British Air Force accepted her, she had her last meeting with her brother; she couldn’t tell him where she was going or why she was leaving, she couldn’t tell him anything! As you can see, Hannah Senesh had many memories in her early life.

Of course like all people in the world, Hannah had some challenges and obstacles in her life. Like I said already she couldn’t do many things like other people because she was Jewish. But her Father died in 1928; when she was only six years old and her brother was seven (which almost tore Hannah apart.) Also, when she left to Palestine, it did feel like her home, only it wasn’t her home; she grew homesick, hoping her brother was alright in Paris, for the war had hit where he was, and for her mother who was in Budapest. Hannah went to Sdot-Yam for her training so she could fight for her freedom (this was after her brother and her last meeting.) But, most of the people didn’t like her in Sdot-Yam, so she had to gain their trust to like her; after she did that people looked up to Hannah as a hard worker, who didn’t give up. Hannah was also arrested for not giving up her gun to the British, so she was arrested for not too long only about a week, or two. But, one of the challenges or obstacles Hannah had that affected her life, was probably not being able to tell anybody where, or what she was doing. She couldn’t tell any information about “The Mission” she was going on. Hannah had many more obstacles and challenges, like she was beaten by the German Soldiers because she wouldn’t tell them the code to the radio, or give them any information but her name. Another, obstacle or challenge she had was probably when they sent all the Jews from the jails to a “Death Camp” in Auschwitz. Or when the Judges couldn’t make a decision if Hannah was guilty or not guilty, so the next trial date was November 4, 1944. It was November 4, and the judges made a decision that Hannah was guilty she would be in jail till the war was over. But, the worst challenge or obstacle Hannah had was when she was executed. The war was over, but the jail officer said she was sentenced to die. Hannah really wasn’t sentenced to die, the jail officer just said she was and had the officers executed her. As you can see, Hannah Senesh had a lot of challenges and obstacles in her daring life.

Being part of the British air force, being part of one of the most dangerous, and courageous rescue attempts of World War II. These are some of the contributions Hannah Senesh did. Hannah also left her mother just for Freedom, for free speech, for better education. Hannah left to be treated more equal, to be respected. To be known not only a Jew but also a person. Hannah left her mother for Freedom (basically). I’m sure Hannah Senesh did a lot more. I know this because she was an amazing Person I look up to her as if I really have met her. As you can see, Hannah Senesh had many contributions.

Hannah Senesh had much recognition in 1942. She was accepted as a member of Sdot-Yam, she was also asked and accepted to join a group of volunteers to do a rescue mission to rescue all the Jews; she was told it was a very risky and daring mission. This was when the British Air force accepted Hannah. Hannah didn’t get any awards; not even for being one of the ONLY women in the British Air force! Or for being part of the most dangerous rescue mission! Or anything! As you can see, Hannah Senesh had much recognition (but not awards).

How would I describe Hannah Senesh? Well, I would describe Hannah as a Daring, Intelligent, and courageous women. Hannah is a Daring Person because; She was part of one of the most dangerous rescue attempts of World War II. She was one of the only three girls who made it to be apart of the rescue attempt! And she never gave up because she wanted to save all the Jews from torture. I would also describe Hannah, as an intelligent person because Hannah would tutor kids and their moms would pay her just to do that. And even though she wasn’t in the best classrooms or the best education Hannah still did her best. Also, because when her mom was going to transfer Hannah and her brother to a different school, because she wanted the best education for them, Hannah’s teachers didn’t want Hannah to leave; they said she was the finest in the class and a joy everyday. I would also describe Hannah as courageous because she was accepted by the British Air force to be part of one of the most courageous and dangerous rescue attempts of the world.

As you can see, Hannah Senesh is a true Heroine from her early life to the day she died, fighting for Jewish freedom.
