"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." This quote was said by the courageous Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was a conductor on the Underground Railroad and she was a civil rights activist and an abolitionist. She was born in Dorchester County, Maryland in 1820. Her original name was Araminta Harriet Ross. Harriet Tubman is a hero because she led thousands of slaves to freedom in the Underground Railroad.

Harriet Tubman's parents, Harriet Green and Ben Ross, were owned by Mary Pattison Brodess and Anthony Thompson. Being born a slave, she sustained permanent injuries as a result of being beaten. Once she was hit by a two-pound weight which gave her seizures and severe headaches for the rest of her life. By undergoing harsh environments when she was little, Harriet thought it wasn't fair for slaves to get hit and tortured so she did something about it and fled in 1849. She returned to the South 19 times to help her family and other slaves escape. She never lost a fugitive and if one changed their mind she would take out her gun and say "You'll be free or die". Harriet Tubman is a hero to many because she was selfless and virtuous. During the 1800s, there was a lot of slavery in the USA so Harriet Tubman helped other slaves escape from slavery. According to the text, "During her ten-year span she made 19 trips into the South and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom"(Harriet Tubman). The quote shows that she is selfless because she went into the Underground Railroad 19 times, risking her own life to help others into freedom. Additionally, the text states, "Harriet was known as 'the Moses of Her People' for her bravery in assisting slaves to freedom"(Harriet Tubman Biography). This evidence shows that Harriet Tubman is virtuous because a lot of people looked up to her by calling her "the Moses of Her People" and Moses was a religious leader which shows that her people thought she was a leader. Based upon these facts, Harriet Tubman is virtuous and selfless because she risked her own life to help others. She inspired a lot of people and still does. Even after she died, many people continued her legacy. Sarah H. Bradford even wrote a biography about her called Harriet Tubman: The Moses of Her People. To this day, Harriet Tubman is widely known and very well respected by many people. She is one of the most well known people in America because she is an inspiration to many.
