Harriet Tubman

by Lauren from San Diego

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world” (Harriet Tubman).

Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 in Maryland. Harriet grew up as a slave; she went through the harsh beatings and working in the treacherous fields. Her master Edward Brodess had taken some of her sisters and sold them to other slave owners, which split her family apart. As years went on Harriet grew up and met a man named John Tubman who was a free man who also later became her husband. Once Harriet’s master died she decided to run away. But Harriet’s husband threatened to turn her in if she left, but she still went ahead and left anyway. She went to a secret underground railroad where she could help slaves become free just as she is. The railroads lead to Canada where there were no slaves, so they all went there to become free. Over the years of helping African Americans she earned the nickname “Moses”. Harriet Tubman later remarried a guy named Nelson Davis who used to be in the Civil War, and Harriet disguised herself as the nurse to help him escape. She also saved about 300 and over slaves during her heroic period.

Tubman had now become an abolitionist for the rights for slaves to be free. An abolitionist is “a person who advocated or supported the abolition of slavery in the U.S.”. Since she is now known for helping slaves escape she was a wanted women, so she uses disguises so that no one will know that it’s her. She had saved a lot of former slaves including some of her friends and family members. Some other abolitionists also agreed what Harriet was doing was right, such as Frederick Douglass, Lucretia Mott, and Susan B. Anthony, and others.

“I grew up like a neglected weed - ignorant of liberty, having no experience of it” (Harriet Tubman). This quote shows that no matter how you grow up it doesn’t stop you from doing great things in your life. Harriet is one of those people you can trust because she is loyal and knows she will always be there for you through thick and thin. Her loyalty can outshine anything bad that has gone on during her lifetime.

In the time of the Civil War, Harriet became a nurse to help the injured African American soldiers, and she sent them to the Underground Railroad to be sent off to Canada. She later opened up a home in New York where she cared for the older people and her mom and dad who she found after all these years. When March 1913 rolled around Harriet Tubman had passed away of pneumonia in her house where she was taking care of everyone. Harriet Tubman had lived an amazing life. Even though the beginning of her life did not go how she planned, she helped as many people that she could and she also got part of her family back. And now she knows that she helped all of them and everyone thanks her for it.

Just because Harriet Tubman was a slave does not mean she cannot be brave and loyal and stand up for what she believes in. Harriet Tubman is inspirational in a way other people cannot. She risked her life just to go out and save slaves that were in need. Harriet went undercover as a nurse and wore disguises almost every day to do what she loves. She has inspired everyone to go out and do what they love and be the best person anyone can be. “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world” (Harriet Tubman).
