Harriet Tubman, née Araminta Ross

by Cristina from Tampico

For me a hero is that person that helps and benefits other people, not expecting anything in exchange. Harriet Tubman had this quality.

Harriet Tubman, African-American abolitionist, humanitarian and Union spy during the Civil War. Mrs. Tubman was born slave in Maryland. When she was a child she was beaten and whipped by her masters. As a youth she suffered several injuries in her body by several circumstances, but that didn't stop her from doing what she wanted and wished for, that is something that many people don´t have, perseverance. If we fail we should try again and again until we achieve what we desire.

Harriet rescued more than three hundred slaves, taking them to the North, where slavery wasn't legal. They called these trips rescue missions. She did more than 13 missions using the Ferry or the Underground Railroad. Many people helped them by giving them food and clothing also a bed to rest on, while the mission was accomplished.

Harriet Tubman is a respectful woman that shouldn't be forgotten in history nor in our memories. She liberated a bunch of people, we should try to help other people, maybe not three hundred but one at a time could make one thousand. Helping each other will make us all heroes.
