My heroes are Davey Havok and Jade Puget, from the bands AFI and Blaqk Audio. These men are wonderful and inspirational musicians who are greatly loved and respected by their fans. They also return that love and respect with the Despair Faction, their AFI ultimate fan club. These guys have heavily impacted their fans' lives (much like myself) and like the length of their memberships, our love and respect for them is for a lifetime.
David Anthony Passaro was born in Rochester, New York on November 20,1975. Even as a young boy he would stand on the kitchen chair and sing show tunes into a wooden spoon. He became interested in punk music in his early adolescence. At age 15, he formed AFI with his friend (and drummer) Adam Carson. After replacing several band members throughout the years and producing three albums, the band became complete, with their bassist Hunter Burgan, a guitarist, long time friend, and new songwriter, Jade Puget.
Jade Errol Puget was born November 28,1973 in Santa Rosa, California. His brother, Smith Puget, is the band’s tour manager. Jade and Davey started Blaqk Audio as a side project to experiment using AFI’s past albums with a techno sound. Years flew by with no results. Then finally, on August 7th 2007, the duo came out with “Cex Cells”, Blaqk Audio’s first album.
While in the early years of AFI, the band had a very underground punk sound with more of a metal look (The devil child of both genres, considering that Punk and Metal are grave enemies.) When “Sing the Sorrow” came out on March 11, 2003, it seemed that their music had changed. It went from loud and grundgey, to poetic and slightly emotional. This new sound has been described as “emo” but it isn’t quite like the other music in the genre. This was a surprise to their fans, who were so used to the band's underground sound. The fans seemed to love it and support them despite the fame “Sing the Sorrow” had given them.
Jade and Davey are people I would love to spend at least a day hanging out with (and with a camera in hand). They are very intelligent, the kind of guys you can have a good, deep conversation with, yet they can be very silly and fun. Davey might greet me saying, "I'm Davey and I sing, make faces and swing from trees.” They are also musical geniuses. I consider their tracks to have healing powers of some kind. There have been times where I have had headaches or stomach- aches, and I listen to their music and I became fine. It even saved me from depression. This is why I say, “AFI saved my life”. Their straight edge lifestyle has also helped other fans. In an interview at a Café, Davey was asked about how it feels to be a hero. Davey answered by saying how really young kids have met him, and told him how they were really deeply involved in drugs and how they discovered the band and looking into some of their philosophy. They were inspired and clean ever since, and they thanked him for that. “To make that kind of change in someone’s life. I can never grown up to that”-Davey I love these guys with all my heart and hope to meet them some day, but until then, I will just have to tell “my readers” about how great they are.
