Ingrid Newkirk was born June 11, 1949 in Surrey, England. At the age of seven, Newkirk and her parents moved to New Delhi, India where she helped her mother volunteer among the poor, working with Mother Teresa. Ingrid Newkirk is a hero because she is determined to end animal cruelty. Newkirk knew she had to do something about animal cruelty and yet she did. She started out of nothing and her foundation became famous. "One of PETA's first projects involved the Institute of Behavioral Research, which employed animal testing in Silver Spring, Maryland. Through Pacheco's hidden camera surveillance, PETA gathered enough evidence to lead to the first police raid on an animal testing facility. Although the charges against psychologist Edward Taub were eventually dropped, it was the first animal rights case to be heard by the US Supreme Court. The event thrust PETA, and Newkirk, into the limelight." Ingrid Newkirk was determined that her foundation would be successful. Newkirk and Pacheco started PETA out of Newkirk's basement, their first project which involved animal testing. This was the first animal rights case heard by the US Supreme Court. This brought PETA into the limelight. It takes determination to get your foundation into the limelight; you need to get out there to make your foundation famous which she did. "Inspired to action, Newkirk and cohort Alex Pacheco decided to found PETA to work "on the front lines," as she put it in People. Various staged demonstrations at medical laboratories and manufacturing plants resulted in some 20 arrests for civil disobedience for Newkirk. But PETA's membership, which swelled over ten years to 325,000, sometimes resorted to disobedience of a different kind. PETA members have claimed responsibility for various break-ins at animal testing facilities." Newkirk shows determination because she started her foundation out of nothing and succeeded into PETA. Her foundation went worldwide after PETA's projects were in the press. After people started to hear about Newkirk's movement and people started to follow it. Newkirk is a hero because she shows compassion towards animals. "Newkirk volunteered at the shelter and worked her way to director, bringing publicity in her wake. But despite her growing public acceptance, Newkirk never lost touch with the animals in her care. One of her tasks at the shelter, Reed recounted, involved destroying unwanted dogs and cats. Even then, Newkirk strived to "soften the animals' dismal end." As Newkirk recalled in that article: "The night before they had to be destroyed, I would take home the ugliest, scruffiest, most decrepit ones and give them a special meal. I'd take them for a long walk and make a big fuss over them. For most of them, that was the best night of their lives." Newkirk shows compassion because she is willing to take care of animals that are in need. She believes that animals and humans should be treated equally; she gave animals at the shelter the best night of their lives the day before they got euthanized. While Newkirk worked at the animal shelter she decided to euthanize the animals instead of killing them like they do in animal shelters. Newkirk shows compassion in many ways. Like "When she took some abandoned kittens to an animal shelter, she volunteered to work at the shelter, cleaning kennels and helping to investigate cruelty case." Newkirk is very compassionate because she volunteered at animal shelters in her free time to help animals. Ingrid Newkirk because the chief of animal cruelty case at an animal shelter, which meant she investigated the cruelty cases; this what she does with PETA. Ingrid Newkirk shows traits of compassion throughout all of her projects, she wants animals to be treated equally and not neglected.
