Ivan Susanin

by Nikita from Bui

When I was seven years old, I heard the name of Ivan Susanin for the first time in my life. Then I found out that my school is situated in Susanin Street. Not far from Bui there is Susanino, a settlement in Kostroma region. Near this place there is Domnino, a village where my hero lived. Now these places are very popular for school trips to study history. In Domnino I saw a huge black stone with the carving "Ivan Susanin, 1613". It's a monument to Ivan Susanin's feat.

Ivan Susanin is a national hero. He lived at the beginning of the 17th century. Ivan Susanin was a peasant in the village that belonged to the Romanovs, the tsar dynasty. According to the legend Ivan Susanin didn't show the enemies the place where the future Russian tsar had been hidden. But he brought them deep into the huge forest. The enemies murdered Ivan Susanin. But they could not find their way out of the dark forest.

Why is Ivan Susanin my hero? He defended his tsar. He loved his country. Ivan Susanin was a true patriot. He was a strong and courageous person.
