Jarome Iginla is my hero. He plays right wing for the Clagary Flames. I cannot skate, so I cannot play ice hockey like he can. But he inspires me to do my best, and that's what I'm going to do. Let me tell you about him.
Jarome Iginla (his nickname is Iggy) was born on July 1st, 1977 in St. Albert, Alberta. When he was young, he was very skilled at baseball; his best position was shortstop. His father got him to sign up for hockey, and when he was 16 he joined the Kamloops Blazers. He won the Memorial Cup twice. In the 1995 Nhl Entry Draft, he was drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Stars. But before he even played a game in the NHL, the Stars traded the Kamloops Blazers star to the Calgary Flames in a deal that sent superstar Joe Neiuwendyk to Dallas. He was given a chance to play when he was called up for two playoff games, where he scored a goal and an assist. The Flames signed him, and the rest is history!

Jarome Iginla has gone on to become one of the best players in Calgary Flames history. In October 2003, he was named captain of the flames, the second player of African descent to be given the honour. In 2004 he led the flames to the Cup finals and recorded a 'Gordie Howe Hat trick'( a goal, an assist, and a fight) in game 3 by taking down Vincent Lecavalier. He has won numerous awards, including the Art Ross trophy, the Memorial Cup, an Olympic Gold medal, the King Clancy Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award. He tied Jose Theodore for the Hart trophy in 2001-2002 and is tied with Pavel Bure for most Maurice Richard trophies as the leading goal scorer, with two. He has also been named to three all-star teams. He would have gone again in the 2006-2007 game with teammates defenseman Dion Phaneuf and goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, but a knee injury kept him out of the game.

Jarome Iginla’s point totals have never been consistent, but now the Flames have players like Alex Tanguay, Daymond Langkow, Kristian Huselius, Dion Phaneuf and Matthew Lombardi, so he can stay in the 90-point range. They also have a magnificent defense corps with all-stars Dion Phaneuf and Adrian Aucoin, olympian Robyn Regehr and Stanley cup winner Cory Sarich. All-star goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff guards the net. Soon, the Flames will be a cup contender once again.
Jarome Iginla is my hero, and maybe someday I’ll be as good as he is.
