Isabel Diaz

by Enrique from Mission

A hero will do anything to help other people. My mom is my hero. She did all she could to help me and my brothers be the best we could. Through a difficult and struggling childhood, without going to school, she made me what I am today.

My mom grew up in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She lived in a very poor house with her father, stepmother, and her stepbrothers. Her stepmother was strict and mean and would not allow her to attend school, so she would babysit her stepbrothers. Meanwhile, her dad was an alcoholic, not making things better.

At that time she knew what she would do. She made a promise that her children would not live like that. To be able to accomplish her goal, she would have to learn more even without going to school. My mom learned the alphabet, how to read and write in Spanish all by herself.

With her hard work, she made her dream come to life. I’m glad our family did not go through a childhood like my mom’s. That is why my mom is my hero. She wanted her children to not have a life like hers. Today, I have three sisters and two brothers. All my sisters are married and have at least one child. My brothers are still in school and are at the top of their classes. My brothers and I are gifted and talented. Without my mom, none of this would’ve happened.

She went through hard times, but my mom never gave up and stuck to her goal. Isabel Diaz is my mom - my hero!
