Jim Carrey

by Joelle from Crystal City

James Eugene “Jim” Carrey was born on January 17, 1962 in Newmarket, Ontario. He has three older siblings; their names are John, Patricia, and Rita. His mom and dad are Kathleen and Percy Carrey. Jim was not a very fortunate child growing up, because in 1977, his father lost his job, so money was very tight in the Carrey household. Shortly after, his mother got very sick, and had to stay in bed. Jim left school to take care of her. He also decided to get a job, so that he could earn some money for the family, and provide for them. Jim Carrey is famous for comedy and his acting. There were many events that changed his life, which were going on stand-up comedy tours, and getting roles in movies. He became a very popular actor, and has starred in many movies over the years.

When Jim was fourteen years old, he wanted to try stand-up comedy, but he was booed off the stage shortly after he started performing one day. Since he still wanted to do stand-up, he never gave up and he kept on practicing writing and doing stand-up routines until he finally succeeded. Jim started doing professional stand-up in 1979. In 1994, Jim was approached by a director of the movie “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and he was asked to play the main character. He accepted. A year later, “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls” was made. Since he played these two roles well, he got the role of Stanley Ipkiss in “The Mask”. Jim had friends, family, and cast mates that helped him along the way. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy in 1995 for The Mask, but he did not win it. He has won four awards that I know of: 2001 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Comedy, 2003 Teen Choice Awards for Choice Comedian, 2005 People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Funny Male Star, and the 2006 MTV Movie Awards for MTV Generation Award.

While Jim Carrey is mostly known as an actor, he has also done a lot of charity work. Jim has an organization called the “Better U Foundation”, which is an organization to help increase the amount of rice in developing countries, and to help people get what they need and deserve. The organization started in 2005. Jim said he created the organization, “so that I can continue to expand my awareness of what people need, to relieve or prevent suffering where possible, and to offer the kind of assistance that allows someone to grow toward independence and self-actualization”. One thing that caught his attention was the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). SRI produces over 50-150% more rice while using 50% less water, 90% less seed and no pesticides or fertilizers.

Jim Carrey has impacted people’s lives incredibly because he has taken quite a bit of time out of his busy life to work on charities, and his own charity has succeeded greatly. He has also impacted people’s lives that have autism, with the help of his ex-wife Jenny McCarthy. Jenny’s son has autism, and they found a way to “cure” it. She did not actually cure the full disease, but she did stuff to help him behave, so that you can barely tell he has it. She treated him by giving him a special diet, B12 injections, supplements and the assistance of a “Defeat Autism Now!” doctor. Her son also got speech therapy. Jim was very supportive throughout the whole experience, helping her with the therapy for Evan, and the treatments. Jim Carrey is an inspiration because he is willing to show that he can also be charitable, and that he doesn’t just want to be known as one of the “funny guys”.

Jim has been through a lot in his lifetime, and he still has a long road ahead of him. From his childhood, to the Better U Foundation, to the autism work, to the acting, to the awards, he has come a long way, and has been very successful. Jim is a hero because he loves to help other people, and is willing to do so, no matter how busy his schedule is. Jim’s future goals are to continue the Better U Foundation, to keep on acting, and to get better and better at what he does. I think Jim Carrey is a great man, and I hope that he continues do to what he loves for a very long time.
