Jerrie Cobb was born on March 5, 1931 in Norman, Oklahoma. Jerrie would sometimes imagine herself in the sky flying because she wanted to go up and see the stars and the clouds. When Jerrie was 12 years old she learned how to fly. Jerrie wanted to be an astronaut. When she got older, she became the first female NASA astronaut.
When Jerrie was 12 years old she took her first flight with her dad. On Jerrie's 16th birthday she earned her private pilot's license. When Jerrie was eighteen, she was a professional pilot. Also when Jerrie was eighteen she was teaching other people how to fly.
First Jerrie started out by working at a small country airport. She got to learn basic things like how to use or how to fly an airplane. When Jerrie was looking for a pilot's job it was hard because many male pilots came back from the war so it was hard for her to work as a pilot. But she got a job at the Miami Airport. The thing that Jerrie did is that she never gave up. Even though male pilots came back, she still looked around and tried to find a job working at an airport. She persevered.
Jerrie Cobb has earned lots of awards. Some awards she got were the Amelia Earhart Medal and Harmon Trophy for the best woman pilot in the world. Also Jerrie Cobb got some government honors from some countries. Also she went to some countries and showed some children what an airplane looked like. She also showed them why people use an airplane and maybe the inside of the airplane.
Jerrie Cobb is my hero because she believed in herself. She believed that she could be a NASA astronaut. And even though males were mostly astronauts, she still wanted to be one. Jerrie Cobb had courage and did what she wanted to do.
