James Duren

by Michael from Long Beach

Scoutmaster Duren is my hero, because of how he lived his everyday life. Mr. Duren was not famous, but it was the little things that he did that makes him my hero. In 2005, Mr. Duren became the Scoutmaster for our Boy Scout Troop 1673. He taught us many things not only about Scouting but about living a Godly life. He took the time to invest in others. Mr. Duren was always ready to teach us.

Even though Mr. Duren was very serious, he knew how to take time out to enjoy life. Around the campfire, he would tell the funniest stories and teach us camp songs. There was never a dull moment with Mr. Duren. As a troop, we played many games like basketball, football, and ultimate Frisbee. Even though he was not young, Mr. Duren would jump right in and play as though he was in his prime. What was amazing was that he was good at all sports. Mr. Duren taught me that it is possible to have fun and still walk with God.

In addition, Mr. Duren taught me personally how to be a better person and live my life for God instead of myself. Being the Senior Patrol Leader, which meant I was in charge of the troop, Mr. Duren taught me how to step up to the plate when it was time to lead. Just as important, he taught me to give others a chance to contribute their gifts to the troop. He taught me how to instruct others that needed help, and how to come alongside them. Unfortunately, on a campout in December, Scoutmaster Duren passed away during the night. Although Mr. Duren is no longer with us, his examples live on in those he invested his life in. He is a hero that lives on in my heart.
