by Lily from San Diego

It was like being in the eye of a hurricane. You'd wake up in a concert and think, Wow, how did I get here? - John Lennon

John Lennon had a crazy life, which somewhat accounts for some of the choices he made. He has also written many songs about his life, and they were very popular, and if his life wasn’t as hard as it was then maybe he wouldn’t be the person he was. When John Lennon was an infant his father, Alf Lennon, left his mother Julia. Since Julia was unable to care for John by herself she gave him to her sister and brother-in-law. Later in life, John co founded the band the Beatles. He married Cynthia Powell and had a child with her then divorced. John later remarried to Yoko Ono and they also had one child. John’s life was tragically ended by Mark David Chapman on December 8th, 1980 outside the Dakota in Manhattan. John Lennon should be considered a hero because he promoted love and peace through his music and for his openness about his beliefs.

John Lennon is a hero because he promoted love and peace through his music. At the time when John was performing and writing songs, music wasn’t very open, you couldn’t just say anything. John started to push the boundary and write songs about world peace and love. This gave people hope during this tough time. Songs like “All you need is love” and “Come together” brought people together and helped shine a light throughout this dark time.

John Lennon is an inspiration because he was very open about his opinions and this changed how people wrote music in the 60s. John pushed the boundary even farther as his career progressed. Not only was he writing about peace and love but he also started questioning religion. This started to open people’s eyes that music can be about anything, just an expression of opinion. In his song “Imagine” he sings “Imagine there’s no heaven.”

All in all John Lennon is a hero because of the power of his music and consequence of that power. He forever changed the music industry and what people think is acceptable. Even though his opinions costs him his life, he is hero for voicing them.
