Jack London

by Kevin from Missouri

Jack London was a hobo, sailor, high school dropout, photographer, and famous writer. He did almost everything and went everywhere. He is someone who was nothing and became one of the most famous writers. He worked hard to get to where he was. That is why Jack London is my hero.

Jack had a really rough childhood. Before he was born his parents split, which must have been really tough for his mother, Flora Wellman. After he was born he was raised by his mother, but mostly by Virginia Prentiss, an ex-slave, because his mother worked all day. His only education was teaching himself how to read at the library.

While growing up, he had many different occupations. His first job was working at a jute mill in unsafe conditions for long hours. When he was old enough he joined a sealing schooner, the Sophie Sutherland, which sailed across the Pacific Ocean to Japan and back. He had other jobs: a debater, a hobo, attending Oakland High School, and being part of the Alaskan gold rush. Having been so many things and having been part of every social class in one lifetime must have been really amazing.

Jack London became a famous writer because of his many great books based on his life experiences. He wrote many great books, such as "The Sea-Wolf," "The Call of the Wild," and "White Fang." He also wrote an autobiography, John Barleycorn, which was about him as an oyster pirate. His great life ended on November 22nd, 1916 from the illness, uremia.

Another book that he wrote was "Martin Eden." In this book he was a former sailor who became a writer so that he could win Ruth Morse's hand in marriage. One of this book's main themes was the significance social classes expressed by Martin, who was part of the working class, who tried to impress Ruth, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, because he did not think he was worthy enough to marry Ruth.

Jack London is my hero because he taught himself, did many different things growing up, and was a great writer. I can only dream about what he did and all of the excitement he had. He worked hard to get where he was. That is why Jack London is my hero.
