Jane Schein

by Michelle from Glenbrook

"You're alive. Do something. The directive in life, the moral imperative was so uncomplicated. It could be expressed in single words, not complete sentences. It sounded like this: Look. Listen. Choose. Act." ~ Barbara Hall, A Summons to New Orleans, 2000
My grandmother and me
My grandmother and me

My grandmother, Jane Schein, was born in Poland and lived with her mom, dad, and cousins. She was described as an independent kid who challenged problems on her own. On Jewish holidays and special occasions, Jane and her family went to temple like every normal Jew did. At the age of 9, Jane and her family were caught up in the midst of the Holocaust. They were forced to move into a ghetto, an immensely gross prison. Soon, a truck came into the ghetto to remove all of the kids and put them into concentration camps. My grandmother ran away and hid until it was safe to return to her family. She was extremely brave, which is one of the reasons she is my hero.

A hero to me is someone who, in their lifetime, has been an inspiration to others. My grandmother has been all of that and more to me. After the war, she was still able to find the love of her life, my Grandpa Harry. Together they have led an amazing life. My grandmother had three kids, including my dad. Her life has only started to get back to normal; I know that deep inside she is still fighting off those awful memories. She has told me that she wants to help people so no one has to go through what she went through.

Today she has reached the amazing age of 76 years old. She works as a physical therapist to help disabled children do daily activities that are very easy for the rest of us to do. The kids my grandmother sees are in very bad condition, but with hard work my grandmother believes anything is possible.

It is hard to believe that she is still working to do her part to give back to the world. She is an inspiration to so many people, not only in my family, but to my friends too. If I were to ever lose her, a huge chunk of my life would be taken away from me. My grandmother is more than just family, more than just a hero, she is a survivor.
