Meet Gymnast Jonathan Horton

2007 World Championship winner Jonathan Horton was born in Houston, Texas on December 31, 1985. He was a gymnast ever since he was a young boy. At such a young age Jon had no idea he’d be winning such big meets and championships. Jon is now 28 years old. He competed in last years summer Olympics for the U.S. Gymnastics team. This isn’t a fraction of this gymnasts’ life.

Jonathan Horton is one of 7 men who made the U.S. Gymnastics team. Jon was the first of two gymnasts named to the Olympic team, along with Paul Hamm. At the 2007 World Championships, Horton took 4th place all around. It’s not enough to get him on the podium or make him a champion, but he is a major gymnast to have come in 4th place against all the other gymnasts. I haven’t heard anything he can’t do.

This summer Jon took a silver medal on high bar. For those of you that don’t know, a silver medal means that you took second place. Also, high bar is one of the hardest events and to come in 2nd place on it is quite an accomplishment. Jon could well be the best gymnast on the men’s team.

Even though Jon is great at other events, there is one that has stumped him ever since he was a kid. That event is pommel horse. At the 2007 World Championships Jon scored a 13.975 out of the 14’s and 15’s he usually got on all the other events. 13’s are okay once in a while so 5 high scores and 1 low isn’t going to hurt his all-around score.

Being a hero, Jon has many different traits. One of those many traits is courage. Jon is courageous because he’s not afraid to get out on the floor and possibly break, dislocate, or fraction something. He also has bravery because if he goes down he gets back up and finishes. Lastly, he is unselfish because if he gets a good score he doesn’t rub it in anyone else’s face. He is my hero because he would never let anyone down, he would only encourage people to do what their dream is.
