On Febuary 10, 2009, Jeremy Lusk, soaring over a 100-foot jump, attempted a "Hart Attack backflip" in a freestyle motocross competition in San Jose, Costa Rica. He sustained head injuries, severe brain damage and a possible spinal cord injury when his bike pitched forward while he attempted a landing after a back flip. His full-face helmet sheared apart on impact and stopped the forward movement of his head as his body flipped over. He entered into cardiac and respiratory failure at Calderon Hospital, and to allow swelling of his brain to subside they placed Jeremy in induced coma.
It is truly unfortunate that someone so talented and with so much more to give to this world has passed so young. There is no doubt that Jeremy Lusk lived his life to the fullest and always aimed to entertain and put on a good show – and for that his fans are truly appreciative. Please keep Jeremy and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Jeremy Lusk made a difference in every person's eyes who enjoyed motorcross. He was known as one of the best motorcross stars of all time. After his death, a trust has been set up in memory of Jeremy. May you Rest In Peace.
The Athlete Recovery Fund was established in 2007 and its intentions are to provide professional athletes with the needed care after a severe injury. These athletes could be a part of many sports such as BMX, FMX and Skate Boarding and they will get the special care they need such as financial support after severe injuries and granting funds for rehab, physical therapy equipment, long-term disability and educational scholarships.
