Jackie Robinson

by YoungChul from New Glarus

"A life is not important except in the impact it has on others." - Jackie Robinson

To me to be a hero you have to do what you love, be a role model and you can never ever give up. Jackie Robinson is one of my heroes because he fits my definition perfectly.

Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player in the major leagues. He loved baseball and never gave up at it even though he went through many years of racial discrimination.

Jackie Robinson did what he loved; baseball. He could have quit at any time but he stuck with it until he was a pro. He promised his coach he would never fight with one of the spectators so he wouldn’t get fired. In high school he did football, basketball and track but his favorite was baseball.

Jackie never gave up even though he went through many years of racial discrimination. People would throw things at him and the team because they had a black baseball player on their team. Jackie was the most valuable player on their team and some people still didn’t like him.

Robinson was a role model for thousands of black and white children. He led the way for African Americans becoming professional athletes. Jackie’s role model was his brother, Matthew Robinson.
