Jason spezza was drafted first overall by the Ottawa Sentors in 2002. In 2000 Jason played for team Canada. He was the third sixteen year old ever to make the team. Going into 2001 he was named Canada's top prospect, he played in the OHL for the first four years.
In 2002 Jason played his first game for the Ottawa Senators, but he only played 22 games that season, and then he went on to play for the OHL. In 2003 he played his first full season for the Ottawa Senators. He scored 22 goals and 55 points in 77 games for the Senators. Due to the subsequent NHL lockout, however, Spezza returned to the AHL in 2004 scoring 117 points with Binghamton. Jason Spezza also outscored Mike Camaleri of the Manchester Monarchs by eight points to capture the John B. Sollenberger Trophy. As the league's leading scorer, Spezza was also awarded the Les Cunningham Award as league MVP.
