Jet Li (online) |
What makes a hero? Do they have to have super hero powers and fly through the city suspended from a rope? In my opinon a hero is someone who is brave, loyal, strong both emotionally and physically, and is caring about other people. A hero takes the time out of their busy day to help people, even if the task is small. A hero is someone to look up to. I picked Jet Li as my hero because he is an action movie star and also a family man.
Jet Li was born Li Lian Jie. He started training at the Beijing Wushu Acadamy at 8 years old. He won five gold medals at the Chinese National Championships in acrobatic martial arts. At 16 he became a coach and continued teaching martial arts throughout his teenage years. He helped students to learn balance, and inner peace as well as how to break a board with their head.

At 20 years old, he starred in his first movie, Shoa Lin Tzu (1979), and his career went on from there. He enjoyed acting and started the 1980's Kung-Fu boom. He became the biggest Kung-Fu star of the 90's. The Kung-Fu boom is about the time when America became interested in martial arts movies and started watching a lot more Chinese action films. He continued acting until his second wife Nina became pregnant. He resumed acting again after the baby was born.
Jet Li was married and had two children, but he and his wife divorced and those two children are grown up and on their own. Jet Li remarried Nina Li Chi in September 1999, and together they had two daughters. Jet Li, his wife, and his first daughter were on vacation in Maldives, when the the tsunami crashed the shores soon after the big earthquake in the Indian Ocean. He injured his foot carring his daughter to safe ground. He cut it on a piece of debris that was blown from inside the hotel. He wasn't hurt too bad and his family was safe from the danger.

I think that Jet Li should be considered a hero because he is a teacher. He trained other students and taught them martial arts and self discipline. And by taking the time to do that I'm sure that he influenced a lot of young men to be strong and at peace with themselves. He also helped to raise his family which means that he is not only focused on providing, but he also wanted to be there to help them grow. I respect how he followed his dreams without leaving anyone behind, and that is what makes him a great hero.
