Pope John Paul II

We chose John Paul II as our hero because we think that during his life he helped a lot of people. He also instilled the peace on the world and he helped in the unity of the towns.

John Paul II was born on May 18, 1920 in Poland, his name birth was Karol Wojtyla. On November 1st, 1946 John Paul II was ordered high priest. With 38 years was called bishop. His Papacy began on October 16, 1978.

His predecessor was John Paul I, his real name was Albino Luciani, he became Pope on August 26, 1978. His Papacy ended on September 28, 1978.

Mexico was the first country that John Paul II visited; it was on January 26th to January 31st, 1979, D.F. Puebla, Zapopan, Guadalajara, Oaxaca and Monterrey.

On May 13, 1981 he was shot and critically wounded by Melmet Ali Agca, a Turkish gunman, as he entered St. Peter's Square to address an audience.

In February 2004 Pope John Paul II was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize.

Nowadays Benedicto XVI is the Pope, his real name is Joseph Alois Ratzinger. He was born on April 16, 1927.
