Kurt Cobain

by Nika from Ljubljana

Kurt Cobain was born on February 20th 1967. Kurt had a happy childhood until his parents divorced. Divorce had a profound effect on his life. He was already very sensitive, after the divorce he began isolating himself from others and began behaving insolently toward adults.

He was a singer, songwriter and a guitarist. He founded a band called Nirvana with Krist Novoseliar in 1987. Nirvana had a lot of drummers until Kurt and Krist settled on Dave Grohl. They released 3 albums. 2nd album Nevermind was very successful and Nirvana sold over 30 million copies worldwide. He died on April 5th 1994 because of self-inflicted gunshot.

There's probably several very important things that to me makes Kurt Cobain special and unique. Maybe not everyone will see it, but I'll try to explain a few reasons why I admire Kurt and Nirvana. I love his energy on stage. He constantly jumped around and usually after the show he, Krist and Dave trashed the whole stage.

When I see Kurt talk, I feel such a genuine aura from him. He always seemed so down to Earth. He didn't behave like a "rock star" or act pompous about it at all. He always came across like a regular guy that loved to play music and have his own insecurities and idiosyncrasies like any other regular person. Most of all, he never wanted to be seen as a huge unattainable rock star. He was embarrassed by certain things like his big Seattle mansion and rejected most of those materialistic things. He kept some of his small town roots and values.

Their music is both very loose, simple punk rock music and also incredibly catchy and accessible. It's not like they planned on selling millions of records. They didn't expect to sell hardly anything at first. There's probably more but those are a few things that I thought of.
