Kurt Cobain after a Nirvana concert (http://xsrb.tumblr.com/ post/50602725/kurt-cobain-suyhnc-ay-tan-bello-via) |
These words came for a musician who started a generation of music that was known as Grunge and he is also my hero. This man knew how hard life was for a child who suffered a divorce in his childhood and knew how to write songs from the heart and ended up losing his life to the pressures of the media over him, his band, and his wife. His name was Kurt Donald Cobain, the lead singer and guitarist of Nirvana and these are my reasons for why he is my hero.

Nirvana:Dave Grohl,Kurt Cobain,Krist Novoselic (http://www.coolfer.com/blog/blog/images/Nirvana.jpg) |
In his lifetime in the 1980s through the 1990s, Kurt, along with Nirvana bandmates, bass player Krist Novoselic and band drummer Dave Grohl started the generation of music known as Grunge after the release of the band’s best well known single from their 2nd album, “Nevermind” called “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Besides Teen Spirit, along with songs from Nevermind like “Come As You Are”, “Lithium”, and “In Bloom”, brought Grunge and other Grunge bands like Alice In Chains became big hits, and Grunge became a mainstream success. But so much attention from the media, people considering him like The Beatles’ John Lennon, made Kurt uncomfortable with all that attention.

Kurt Cobain as a child (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Cobain) |
Cobain in his lifetime lived in the town of Aberdeen, Washington, in his childhood years, living with his mother and father, Wendy and Donald Cobain and sister Kimberly. Kurt always had a happy normal life while living in the Seattle area, but everything changed for him when at the age of 8, his parents got a divorce, which changed Kurt’s life forever. He stated in an interview, "I remember feeling ashamed, for some reason. I was ashamed of my parents. I couldn't face some of my friends at school anymore because I desperately wanted to have the classic, you know, typical family. Mother, father. I wanted that security, so I resented my parents for quite a few years because of that.” A year later after the divorce, Kurt moved with his father in Montesano, Washington, but after a couple of years, Cobain started becoming really rebellious which became too much for his father, so he moved between his mom and dad from time to time. In his adult years, Kurt and his wife, Courtney Love owned a house in Lake Washington in the Seattle area. It was there at the “greenhouse” where later on at the age of 27, Kurt would be found dead from a gunshot wound.

Welcome to Aberdeen.With A dedication to Kurt (http://en.wikipedia.org/) |
Kurt Cobain lived though his life from his birth in February 20th of 1967 until April 5th of 1994. He lived in Aberdeen in his childhood years and lived there before he moved in with his father. While living there in Montesano, Kurt converted to Christianity but later renounced it due to some “anti-God” rants, which are explained, in his song, “Lithium”. In the middle of his 10th year in high school, Kurt moved back with his mom in Aberdeen, but 2 weeks before graduation, he dropped out after realizing he didn’t have enough credits to graduate. So his mom gave him a choice: To either get a job or leave the house. He chose to leave. He lived from place to place in Aberdeen, even stating once that he lived under a bridge near the Wishkah River, even though it was proven a myth, especially to Kurt’s best friend and Nirvana bandmate, Krist Novoselic. Kurt, later in his adult life, lived in the Denny-Blaine area in Seattle, east of Lake Washington with his wife Courtney Love, singer of Hole, and their daughter, Francis Bean Cobain. It is later at his home in the “green house”; Kurt would be found dead by an electrician on April 8th of 1994.

Kurt Cobain thinking of a new song (http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/KurtCobain300.jpg) |
My big reason on why Kurt Donald Cobain is my hero is that he influenced a lot of people and musicians and showed them that people like those considered to be a nonentity could become successful, but it’s very heart-breaking that someone like him took his own life at a young age. Also, Kurt wrote many songs that people could relate to, even if the words of the songs are completely strange and a bit odd, similar to Emily Dickinson and her poems. All I can tell you is this: Kurt will and always will be a musician who started as person who was always rebellious and was considered a loser and later became one of the biggest well known musicians in his time and that’s something the world will never forget.
